Promises and Warnings

All people live on promises…
And all people need someone to warn them.

The Quran is not only a book of commands…
But rather a book of promises…
And also a book of warnings.

Promises of mercy.

Promises of forgiveness.

Promises that good deeds will not be lost.

And in contrast…
Warnings against injustice.

Warnings against arrogance.
Warnings against allowing one's heart to be corrupted.

Allah doesn't warn us so as to frighten us…
But rather to offer us protection.

Just as a father telling his son:

Don't touch the fire.

Not because he wants to prevent him from experiencing life…
But because he wants to protect him from getting his hand burned.

Promises give you hope…
And warnings protect you from going astray.

And between hope and fear…

Man treads down the path of life.

{And fulfill the covenant of AllŒh when you have taken it, [O believers], and do not break oaths after their confirmation while you have made AllŒh, over you, a security [i.e., witness]. Indeed, AllŒh knows what you do.}AN-NAḤL-91"
