Allah does not love those who cause corruption
Corruption on earth is that very act that causes it: it includes everything that leads to the destruction of the order that Allah, exalted be He, has created in the universe. Allah, exalted be He, created the earth fertile and provided it with everything it needs to produce a livable environment. He blessed it and made of it a dwelling place for a dignified living. However, because of human corruption, people can corrupt this earth and change what is good into something harmful. This corruption may be personal, social, or even political.
Allah, exalted be He, says in His Noble Book:
“And [mention, O Muḥammad], when your Lord said to the angels,
“Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.” They
said, “Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and
sheds blood, while we exalt You with praise and declare Your
perfection?”He [Allah] said, “Indeed, I know that which you do
not know.”'” (Al-Baqarah: 30)
This verse shows how the angels expressed their fear of human corruption on earth. However, Allah, exalted be He, knows that corruption is not the final goal; rather, it is part of His wisdom in creating humanity. Corruption on earth does not concern environmental corruption only; it extends to human behavior as well and to actions that are harmful to society and lead to discord and complications.
Corruption on earth can take many forms; it can take the shape of personal sins that lead to the corruption of the individual himself, or that of social corruption that results from the spread of discord and suspicion. Through personal sins and corruption, people corrupt themselves first. Allah, exalted be He, says: “And when he goes away, he strives throughout the land to cause corruption therein and destroy crops and animals. And Allah does
not like corruption.” [Al-Baqarah: 205]
Personal corruption spills over into the person’s surroundings and cause the spreading of bad morals that influence those around them. Corrupt people try to justify themselves by claiming that they aim to reform, when in fact they are corrupters, as Allah, exalted be He, says: "And when it is said to them, “Do not cause corruption on the earth,”they say, “We are but reformers.”." Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, and they perceive [it] not." (Al-Baqarah: 11)
Those who believe they are achieving reform while they themselves are corrupting the earth go on destroying moral values among people, disrupting societies and leading to the spread of corruption everywhere.
The greatest responsibility in confronting corruption falls upon the shoulders of reformers, who must work diligently in order to repair what the corrupters have corrupted. We have to be cautious and not be deceived by the claims of reform that the corrupters promote, just as we have to encourage the spread of goodness and justice in society.
Reforming the earth and preserving its righteous values is not an easy task, but a necessary one so as to achieve a balance between people and their environment as well as justice and equality in society. Resisting corruption, avoiding sin, and adhering to Islamic values can be the path to saving the earth from the corruption that is wreaking havoc all over the land.
