What is the ruling of performing the Taraweeh prayer?

It is a part of the Prophetic Sunnah

The Prophet Muhammad, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, offered the Taraweeh prayer for three nights with his companions then he abstained from doing so out of fear that it will be incumbent upon them to do so.

Allah said ( interpretation of the meaning ) :

{ And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station. }
