Why does Islam warn against taking

A non-Muslim might wonder why does the Quran warn against taking disbelievers as allies? The answer is that this does in no way aim to forbid interacting with non-Muslims in a just manner, or treating them with kindness, which are practices that have been affirmed by Islam. It is rather a warning against an allegiance in terms of faith so as one is led to follow falsehood, support it, or give it precedence over the truth. That is why the Quran states:
“Let not the believers take the disbelievers as allies rather than the believers...” [Al-Imran: 28]
It then makes clear the consequence of following those who uphold falsehood, saying:
“Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken that person as a close friend.” [Al-Furqan: 28]
The message here has a universal value: people are responsible for their own choices and should not pledge allegiance to individuals or ideas that keep them away from the truth. For this reason, Islam invites every person to seek the truth for themselves, far from from social pressure or the blind imitation of others
